Who Art Thou…Frida Kahlo?
Our Frida Kahlo series strives to evoke self-awareness in
your little artist through artistic expression. We will use the
cloze procedure technique to take notes in our Art & Kustom
Kreations sketchbooks in order to learn all about the interesting
life and artwork of Ms. Kahlo. Each week in the Who Art Thou
series begins with a collage to represent characteristics about
the featured artist coinciding with those of your little artist. We
want your young artist to realize that they are REAL artists just
like the famous artists about whom they are learning. The series
continues with a self-portrait lesson where students use mirrors
to look at themselves and study each unique line of their own
faces. Wednesday and Thursday are “paint days”, so please send
your little artist to class with an oversized shirt or smock. On
these two days, we will use pencil and acrylic paint to create a
work of self-expression which represents our family’s culture
as we study the many self-portraits of Ms. Kahlo. There will be
cultural dress, food, and architecture references for the students
to explore before they begin. The Kahlo series concludes with
crayon and colored pencil drawings of the little artists with their
friends. We will make these drawings Frida-esque by adding
tissue paper flowers to the hair and embellishing with beads
and other found objects. This series does wonders for boosting
self-confidence through enhancement of problem-solving skills
and is perfect for the introspective student!

Who Art Thou…Georgia O’Keeffe?
Join us as we explore Georgia O’Keeffe and her many beautiful
compositions of nature! As we learn about the life and art
of Ms. O’Keeffe, we will use the cloze procedure technique
to take notes in our Art & Kustom Kreations sketchbooks.
Each week in the Who Art Thou series begins with a collage
to represent characteristics about the featured artist coinciding
with those of your little artist. The week continues with
a lesson on O’Keeffe’s friendship with fellow artist, photographer,
Ansel Adams. We will create mixed media drawings
depicting our friendships and activities with other artists.
Wednesdays and Thursdays are “paint days” in the Who Art
Thou series so please send your little artist to class with an
oversized shirt or smock as we will be studying paintings like
Music – Pink and Blue and Flower of Life. On Wednesday,
we will use the microscopes in our imagination to create
extremely closeup marker drawings of organic shapes before
we tie them together with watercolor. On Thursday, we will
learn about tints and shades as we use acrylic paint to create
enormous, monochromatic flowers. On our final day together,
we will create oil pastel landscapes on colored paper to
reflect our new-found understanding of light and shadow.
This will be a study of O’Keeffe’s Black Mesa Landscape. This
series is perfect for the little artist who enjoys nature and the
outdoors and painting compositions larger than life!
